History of Aga Khan Palace 

The history of Aga Khan Palace is associated with the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is built in 1892 during the reign of Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan III. It served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai between August 1942 and May 1944, after the Quit India Movement began. In addition, many known figures of the freedom struggle like Sarojini Naidu were also imprisoned here during 1942. At that time Kasturba Bai and Desai breathed their last here.

Thereafter the Mahatma buried him here and his memorials were set up in the palace complex. Gandhi and other freedom fighters were imprisoned in the palace for two years before being released in May 1944. After independence, in 1969, the AgaKhan donated the palace to the Government of India. Later, the Aga KhanPalace became famous as the Gandhi National Memorial. In March 2003, the Archaeological Survey of India declared the palace a “Monument of National Importance”.

Apart from this the rooms used by Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu are also well preserved.
