Mother arrives without invitation in the yagya organized by King Prajapati Daksha, the father of Goddess Sati. In that he deliberately did not give space to humiliate son-in-law Shiva. Unable to bear anything against her husband, Goddess Sati threw herself into the pool of Yagya. When Shiva came to know about the death of his wife, he became enraged and gave birth to Veerabhadra.

While mourning the death of his wife, Shiva held the body of Sati tenderly and started the dance of destruction (Tandava). To save the universe and bring back Shiva’s purity, Lord Vishnu cut the lifeless body of Sati into 51 pieces using Sudarshan Chakra. These pieces fell on the earth at many places where today the Shaktipeeth of the Goddess is established. One of the 51 pieces of Goddess Sati’s body fell at this place where today is the famous temple of Chinnamastika Devi or Chintpurni Devi.
