In 1986, it was officially recognized as one of the major national parks of India in memory of ornithologist Salim Ali. Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali was an Indian ornithologist and neurologist. He was one of the first Indians to conduct extensive surveys to study and write on birds and to popularize ornithology in India. The site was modified between 1998 and 2001 by the then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah into the Royal Springs Golf Course.
