History of Purandar Fort
The history of Purandar Fort dates back to the 11th century. The fort was first associated with the Yadava era. The Persians defeated and conquered the Yadavas and in 1350 they built the Purandhar Fort. The fort was ruled by the government during the reign of Ahmednagar and Bijapur kings. Maloji Bhosale ruled Supa and Pune in the 16th century. This fort was also included in it. The fort was raided and captured by Maloji’s grandson Shivaji Bhosale in 1646. The fort is considered to be one of the first victories of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Aurangzeb had conquered the fort in 1665.
Shivaji Maharaj had signed the first treaty of Purandar with Aurangzeb to save the legacy of the ancestors. Under this deal Shivaji had to hand over his twenty-three forts including the Purandar Fort. In 1670, Shivaji Maharaj reconquered the Purandhar Fort. The Second Treaty of Purandar was signed between the Marathas and the British in 1776. But this was not followed. The fort was captured by Koli chief Kuriji Naik in 1790. In 1818 it came under General Pritzler. At the time of World War II the attraction functioned as an intermittent camp.
