Panna National Park was established in 1981 by the Government of India. In 1975, some major part of Gangu Wildlife Sanctuary was created in the eastern part of the park. Earlier, the reserved forest area of ​​Panna Tiger Reserve was the hunting ground of the former rulers of the princely states of Chhatarpur and Bijawar. Today the area of ​​the Ganagu Sanctuary is part of the territorial forests of the Panna Forest Division.

In the year 2008, the tiger almost disappeared due to poaching from Panna Tiger Reserve. Only two or four tigers were left in it. Due to this the morale of the employees of Panna National Park started falling. In 2009, IFS officer Sri R Srinivasa Murthy, Director of Panna Tiger Reserve, in collaboration with WWF and PATA brought tigers from another Tiger Reserve.
