Narayan Sarovar or Narayansar is a village and a place of pilgrimage for Hindus on the Kori Creek. It is 4 km from Koteshwar temple in Kutch district of Lakhpat taluk of Gujarat state. The name of Narayan lake is also included in the five important lakes. Because it is related to Lord Vishnu. Narayan Sarovar means the lake of Vishnu. Here the Indus river meets the ocean. On the banks of the Sangam is the holy Narayan lake.

The discussion of this holy Narayan Sarovar is found in Shrimad Bhagwat. There are references to the arrival of many sages of ancient times in this holy lake. Adi Shankaracharya also came here. The Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang has discussed this lake in his book ‘Siuki’. A grand fair of 3 days is organized in Narayan lake from Kartik Purnima. In it, monks, sannyasis and devotees of all sects of India are involved.

History of Narayan Sarovar

The origin of Narayan lake comes from the Puranas. It is said that this region was dry. And Lord Vishnu had appeared by the ardent prayer by the sages. When he touched the ground with his toe. So immediately a lake was formed. Due to which the local people got freedom from their miseries. It is one of the sacred lakes of Hinduism along with Mansarovar in Tibet, Pampa in Karnataka, Bhubaneshwar in Orissa and Pushkar in Rajasthan.

Information About Narayan Sarovar

The holy Narayan Sarovar is located at Lakhpat in Kutch district. It is one of the five holy lakes according to Shrimad Bhagwat. Every year lakhs of devotees come here to take bath in the lakes. A three-day grand fair is organized in this lake from Kartik Purnima. This holy lake is mentioned by Vedavyasji in Shrimad Bhagwat. It is said in the fourth skandha of this book. That in the third generation of Maharaja Prithu, the king became Barhish. His son Daspachetas decided to do penance to get a son and he reached Narayan lake.

After penance, Lord Rudra appeared and recited Rudragan to Daspachetas and also blessed the fulfillment of his wishes. After this, Daspachetas stood in the water and started chanting Rudra. According to the scriptures, he did penance for 10 thousand years. After this God was pleased and his wish was fulfilled. In the chronology, a son was born in his house by the name of Daksha Prajapati. The present Chairperson of Narayan lake Sansthan is Anandlal Ji Maharaj. Who is running this bench since Vikram Samvat 2047.

Religious Significance

Narayan Sarovar, a huge lake at the western end of India, has great spiritual significance. It is one of the 5 sacred lakes of Hinduism along with Mansarovar in Tibet, Pampa in Karnataka, Bhubaneshwar in Orissa and Pushkar in Rajasthan. It is considered a revered place for holy dip. An adjoining temple built by the wife of Maharao Desalji houses the shrines of Shri Trikmaraiji, Laxminarayan, Govardhannathji, Dwarkanath, Adi Narayan, Ranchhodraji and Lakshmiji. A little away from here is the grand sandstone Koteshwar Mahadev Temple. Which overlooks a marshy sea. Temples dedicated to Shiva and Ganesha are the main attractions here।

Significance of Shradh in Narayan Sarovar

Coming to Narayan Sarovar, devotees also perform Shradh for the satisfaction of their ancestors. Because of that, there is a crowd of devotees here in the Pitru Paksha of Bhado month. There is an ancient and grand temple of Lord Adi Narayan on the banks of the holy Narayan lake. 4 KM from Narayan Sarovar Far away is the ancient Koteshwar Shiva temple. Narayan lake has grand temples of Trikamji, Laxminarayan, Govardhannathji, Dwarkanathji, Adi Narayan, Ranchhodraji, and Lakshmiji. Shradh is very important in this pilgrimage place.

These temples were built by the queen of Maharao Deshalji Tritiya of Kutch. Devotees from all over India come to visit here. The temples and ponds located here are full of ancient architecture, carvings and art-work. The temples of Laxminarayan and Trikam Rai have been constructed like the famous Jagat Mandir. The other 5 temples were built in 1780 by Maharao Deshalji’s queen. There is also good facility of accommodation and food for the travelers.

Fair

Two annual fairs are held here. One in Chaitra (April-May) and the other from 10th to 15th of Kartik (November-December). Thousands of pilgrims from western India come to perform funeral ceremonies on the banks of the river. The facility of accommodation of pilgrims is also available here. In 1981, the area around the village was notified as a wildlife sanctuary, Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary. Red antelope or chinkara are found in the sanctuary.
