महाकालेश्वर मंदिर का इतिहास – उज्जैन शहर को भगवान महाकाल की नगरी कहते हैं। शिव पुराण के मुबाबिक उज्जैन में बाबा महाकाल का मंदिर बहुत पुराना है। मंदिर की स्थापना द्वापर युग में श्री कृष्ण भगवान के पालक पिता जी नंद जी की 8 पीढ़ी पूर्व हुई थी। 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक महादेव मंदिर में दक्षिण मुखी होकर विराजमान है। 1107 से लेकर 1728 के समय तक उज्जैन शहर में यवनों का शासन था। उस समय हिंदुओं की परम्पराएं नष्ट हो गई थी।
1690 में मालवा क्षेत्र में हमला कर दिया था। उसके बाद 29 नवंबर 1728 में मराठा शासकों ने मालवा पर अपना अधिकार जमाया था। उसके बाद उज्जैन शहर का गौरव फिर से वापस आ गया था। 1731 से 1728 के बाद यह मालवा की राजधानी थी। मराठो के अधिपत्य में महाकालेश्वर मंदिर का फिर से निर्माण हुआ था। एव ज्योतिर्लिंग की ख़ोई प्रतिष्ठा वापस आ गई थी। और यहाँ सिंहस्थ पर्व स्नान की स्थापना हुई थी। उस मंदिर का विस्तार राजा भोज ने किया गया था।
