काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर का इतिहास – History of Kashi Vishwanath Temple
विश्वनाथ मंदिर के भवन का निर्माण किस वर्ष किया गया, यह अभी तक अज्ञात है। लेकिन इस मंदिर का उल्लेख प्राचीन लिपियों और मिथकों में किया गया है। माना जाता है कि दूसरी ईस्वी में मंदिर को कई आक्रमणकारियों ने नष्ट किया था जिसे बाद में एक गुजराती व्यापारी द्वारा बनवाया गया। 15 वीं एवं 16 वीं शताब्दी में अकबर के शासनकाल के दौरान मंदिर को नष्ट कर दिया गया था। तब अकबर के ससुर राजा मान सिंह ने मंदिर का निर्माण कराया था।
लेकिन हिंदुओं ने इस मंदिर का बहिष्कार किया क्योंकि राजा ने एक मुस्लिम परिवार में अपने पुत्री की शादी की थी। 17 वीं शताब्दी में मंदिर को औरंगजेब ने नष्ट कर दिया और एक मस्जिद बनवाया। मस्जिद के ठीक पीछे प्राचीन मंदिर के अवशेष देखे जा सकते हैं। वर्तमान संरचना का निर्माण 1780 में इंदौर के मराठा शासक अहिल्या बाई होल्कर द्वारा एक निकटवर्ती स्थल पर किया गया था। 1983 से मंदिर का प्रबंधन उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार द्वारा किया जाता है।

इसे फिर से बनाया गया, लेकिन एक बार फिर इसे सन् 1447 में जौनपुर के सुल्तान महमूद शाह द्वारा तोड़ दिया गया। पुन: सन् 1585 ई. में राजा टोडरमल की सहायता से पं. नारायण भट्ट द्वारा इस स्थान पर फिर से एक भव्य मंदिर का निर्माण किया गया। इस भव्य मंदिर को सन् 1632 में शाहजहां ने आदेश पारित कर इसे तोड़ने के लिए सेना भेज दी। सेना हिन्दुओं के प्रबल प्रतिरोध के कारण विश्वनाथ मंदिर के केंद्रीय मंदिर को तो तोड़ नहीं सकी, लेकिन काशी के 63 अन्य मंदिर तोड़ दिए गए।
