The Indian Museum located in Kolkata is the ninth oldest museum in the world. Its foundation was laid in 1814. And since then it has been a center of multidisciplinary activities. The Indian museums known as Jadugars are famous for some of the finest collections of contemporary paintings, sacred relics of Buddha, Egyptian mummies and ancient sculptures, jewellery, fossils, skeletons, antiquities, armlets and stunning Mughal paintings.

History of Indian Museum

IndianMuseum India is the oldest museum in the country. It was established in the Asiatic Society building in 1814 by Dr. Nathaniel Wallich, a famous Danish botanist. In 1840, the government expanded the geology and minerals section and provided a grant of Rs 250 per month for the geology section. The biggest contribution of the museum was made by the Zoological and Anthropological Section of the museum to the Zoological Survey of India in 1916. In 1945, the Anthropological Survey of India was born. In addition to being a safe haven for many priceless relics, the Indian Museum has also served many roles and services.

Best Time To Visit Indian Museum

Tourists can visit the Indian Museum Kolkata at any time of the year. But along with the IndianMuseum, other tourist places of Kolkata city also want to visit. So between October to February i.e. the autumn and winter months are the hottest months to visit the city of Kolkata. Avoid traveling to Kolkata in summer starting from March. Because at that time the temperature here reaches up to 45 degrees.

Talking about the timings of the IndianMuseum, the Indian Museum Kolkata is open on all days except Monday. It is open from March to November from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and from December to February from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Let us tell you that it is closed on festivals like Republic Day, Holi, Independence Day, Gandhiji Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali and Eid-ul-Fitr. The entry fee of the IndianMuseum has been kept at Rs 20 for Indian tourists and Rs 500 for foreign tourists.

The structure of the IndianMuseum is an architectural grandeur. It is designed in Italian style by the famous architect Walter B. Graville. The building consists of three floors. The three floors each have an area of ​​about 930 square meters.

Archaeological Section

The Archaeological Section of the IndianMuseum consists of the Pre and Proto-Historic Galleries, the Main Entrance Gallery, the Bharhut Gallery, the Gandhara Gallery, the Long Archaeological Gallery, the Bronze Gallery, the Coin Gallery, the Small Art Gallery and the Egypt Gallery.

Art section

There are Mughal Painting Gallery, Bengal Painting Gallery, Decorative Art and Textile Gallery South East Asian Gallery.

Anthropology stream

In this section one can see the Paleo-Anthropology Gallery, the Cultural Anthropology Gallery, the Mask Gallery and the Musical Instrument Gallery under the Anthropology Section.

Zoology Section

The Zoology Section of the IndianMuseum houses the Fish Gallery, Amphibia and Reptilia Gallery, Bird Gallery, Mammal Gallery and Ecology Gallery.

Geology Section

The main attractions of the Geology section are the Siwalik Gallery, the Invertebrate Fossil Gallery, the Earth Rock and Mineral Gallery and the Meteorites Gallery with the Gem Section.

Botany section

The Botany Department of the IndianMuseum houses resources for Indian timber, food products, medicinal products, vegetable fibres, oils and oilseeds and various crops commonly grown in India.
