Chamundeshwari Temple is located in the city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka, India. This temple is a Hindu temple situated on the top of Chamundi hill, not far from Mysore city. Chamundeshwari Devi located in the temple is considered to be the fierce form of Shakti. Mata Chamundeshwari Devi is known as the patron of the King Maharajas of Mysore. History of Chamundeshwari temple 

Situated on the top of Chamundi hills, Chamundeshwari Mandir is one of the most popular and ancient temples of Mysore. Due to this the history of this temple is more than 1,000 years old. Earlier it was built as a simple temple. But later it has gained immense popularity due to the divinity of Goddess Durga. The temple grew in great importance during the rule of Maharaja Wodeyar of Mysore in 1399 AD.

The main contribution to the temple goes to the three dynasties- Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and Mysore rulers. According to history records, the original temple was built by the Hoysala rulers in the 12th century. The towers were then built by the Vijayanagara rulers of the 17th century. After that a flight of a thousand stairs was built in 1659. It goes up to the 3000 ft summit of Chamundi hill.

But the weather remains quite pleasant throughout the year. Apart from this the temple is highly crowded in the months of September and October due to the festivals of Dussehra and Diwali. One can visit the temple in the morning as well as in the evening.

Chamundeshwari Temple Timings And Entry Fee

Chamundeshwari Temple is open from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm and from 3:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Morning worship timings in the temple are from 6:00 am to 7:30 am and in the evening from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. In the middle of that time the devotees can have darshan of the mother in the temple. And every day in the temple from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, food is given to the devotees in the form of prasad. There is no entry fee to enter the temple and visit Mata Rani.

Architecture of Chamundeshwari Temple

Chamundeshwari Temple is built in the Dravidian style and displays a quadrilateral structure. It consists of the main gate, the entrance gate, the Navrang Hall, the Antara Mandapa, the sanctum sanctorum and the Prakara. At the entrance is a beautiful seven-step pyramidal tower. And there is a small minaret above the sanctum. There are seven golden urns on the top of the minaret located at the entrance. The minaret at the entrance has an image of Lord Ganesha at the door.

You enter. So on the right side there is a small idol of Lord Ganesha. After that in front of the sanctum there is a Dhwajastambh, the footprints of the goddess and a small idol of Nandi. This temple dates back to great antiquity and is a symbol of the crown of Mysore. The idol of Nandi is made of granite. And it is placed on the 800th stairway on the hill. It is adorned with metal bells around its neck.

The religious importance of the temple of Chamundeshwari Mata is told. That Durga Mata had killed the demon king Mahishasura on the top of this Chamundi hill. At the time when Mata killed the demon, this region was ruled by Mahishasura. And this entire region was known as Mahisharu. Later, when the British came under the rule of this country, the British changed the name of this country to Mysore. The Chamundeshwari Mandir situated on the Chamundi mountain is also considered a Shaktipeeth. Because here the hair of Goddess Sati had fallen. It is also known as Kroncha Peetham in South India.

One can reach Kempegowda International Airport from Bangalore to reach Chamundeshwari Mandir by air. The temple is 219 kms away from the airport.
