History of Alopi Devi Temple

This temple is special because there is no idol of any deity in the temple. But there is a wooden cart or doli. who is worshipped. The origin of the name, Alopi (Vanishing) Bagh is in Hindu belief. That after the death of his wife Sati, Lord Shiva traveled the skies with her dead body. Lord Vishnu threw the chakra on the corpse to free him from this pain. As a result of that various parts of the body collapsed at different places in India.

Which was sanctified by the touch of the body parts of the goddess and hence considered as a holy place for pilgrimage. The last part fell at this place which is named Alopi and the holiest of all. According to some historical legends, the great Maratha warrior Shrinath Mahadji Shinde in 1772 AD. This site was developed during his stay in Allahabad. Maharani Baijabai Scindia did the work of renovation of ghats and temples in Allahabad.

Legend of The Alopi Devi Temple

Talking about the story of Alopi Devi, when Goddess Sati went against her father Daksha and married Lord Shiva. After that marriage, Daksha had organized a yagya. In it, all other deities were invited except him to humiliate Shiva. Despite that, Goddess Sati reaches that yagya. Where due to her and Shiva’s respect, she jumps into the fire pit and gives up her life.

Shiva ji gets information about this incident. So he becomes sad and angry and kills Daksha by creating Veerabhadra. After that the goddess starts doing tandav with the dead body of Sati. Later, worried, Lord Vishnu cuts the dead body of Goddess Sati into pieces with the Sudarshan Chakra, which falls in different parts of the earth. The Shakti Peeth was built where the pieces of Sati’s body fell.

To tell another famous story related to the Alopi Devi temple, it is said that once a herd of dacoits attacked the procession. Here after robbing the procession and killing some people, the robbers moved towards the bride’s ‘doli’ and saw that the bride was missing from that doli. After that that girl is being considered as a goddess. And a temple was established at that place. It is now known as Alopi Devi Temple.
